How much raw food to feed your dog
Adult dogs eat about 2 to 3 percent of their ideal body weight a day. That is roughly 2 percent for a less active dog or a senior, 2.5 percent for most dogs, and 3 to 3.5 percent for a working or very active dog. A 50 lb dog at 2.5 percent eats about 1 lb 4 oz of raw food a day. Puppies eat about 3 percent of their expected adult weight, spread over three meals.
Use the raw dog food calculator to get the daily amount in ounces and grams, the 80/10/5/5 or BARF split, and an estimated weekly cost.

Common questions
What is raw dog food?
Raw dog food is uncooked meat, bone, organ and often vegetables, fed instead of cooked or processed food. The two common models are BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) and PMR (Prey Model Raw). Commercial raw food is sold frozen, freeze-dried or dehydrated; homemade raw is prepared from raw ingredients.
How much raw food should I feed my dog?
Adult dogs eat roughly 2 to 3 percent of their ideal body weight a day. Use about 2 percent for less active dogs and seniors, 2.5 percent for most dogs, and 3 to 3.5 percent for working or very active dogs. A 50 lb dog at 2.5 percent eats about 1 lb 4 oz a day, split across one or two meals.
What is the 80/10/5/5 rule?
It is the Prey Model Raw ratio by weight: 80 percent muscle meat, 10 percent raw edible bone, 5 percent liver and 5 percent other secreting organ. The BARF model instead uses roughly 70 percent muscle meat, 10 percent bone, 5 percent liver, 5 percent other organ, 7 percent vegetables, 2 percent seeds and 1 percent fruit.
Is raw dog food safe?
Raw meat carries bacteria such as Salmonella and Listeria, so handling matters: keep it frozen or chilled, defrost in the fridge, clean surfaces and bowls, and wash hands after handling. The CDC and AVMA advise caution, particularly in households with young children, elderly people or anyone immunosuppressed. Talk to your vet before switching, especially if your dog is ill or on medication.
Where can I buy raw dog food near me?
Rawgle lists suppliers by city across the United States and Australia, including pet butchers, raw food makers, specialist retailers and farm-direct sellers. Open your city page to see who is local, whether they offer delivery or pickup, and how to contact them directly.
Is raw feeding more expensive than kibble?
It varies. Homemade raw built from muscle meat, bone and organ is often comparable to premium kibble, while complete commercial raw is usually the most expensive option. Cost depends on the protein, whether you buy in bulk, and whether you have a local butcher. The Rawgle calculator estimates weekly cost from your dog's weight and the price per pound you pay.
